Bridgestone has been awarded the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its impactful Bridgestone Road Safety Program (BRSP).
This accolade celebrates the significant strides Bridgestone has made in advancing global road safety, resonating deeply with its ethos of empowering communities and enhancing mobility with peace of mind. Presented at a ceremony at The Savoy, London, by His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, the award underscores Bridgestone’s innovative and community-focused approach to road safety.
With a history of over 30 years, the awards programme recognises initiatives that improve road safety across the globe, and Bridgestone’s programme stood out for its strategic alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.6: halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.
Bridgestone’s BRSP integrates education, infrastructure improvement, and employee engagement into a cohesive strategy, targeting vulnerable road users across diverse geographies. The programme operates on four key pillars:
- Safer Mobility – Leveraging cutting-edge tyre technology and sustainable mobility solutions.
- Safer Communities – Conducting educational initiatives to raise awareness among all road users.
- Safer Roads – Partnering with governments and local stakeholders to enhance road infrastructure.
- Employee Engagement – Mobilising employees to contribute actively to road safety in their communities.
A $1 million pledge to the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) from 2022 to 2025 further solidifies Bridgestone’s commitment to its mission. This financial support amplifies the programme’s impact, helping extend its reach and effectiveness globally.
From India to Italy, and Japan to Latin America, the BRSP has made tangible improvements in road safety. Notable initiatives include:
Thailand: School-based education programmes and infrastructure upgrades have significantly enhanced safety ratings in key areas.
India: “Project Sarthi” equips underprivileged youth with formal training in heavy vehicle driving, opening doors to employment and safer road practices.
Italy: Collaborating with the Italian Red Cross, Bridgestone conducts workshops fostering road safety awareness among young drivers.
Latin America: Interactive programmes in Costa Rica and Mexico teach children the fundamentals of road safety.
Japan: Through community-driven initiatives like bicycle safety campaigns and tyre safety education, Bridgestone addresses the needs of diverse road users, from children to the elderly.
Paul Choo, Chief Human Resources Officer of Bridgestone Asia Pacific, aptly encapsulates the programme’s ethos: “At Bridgestone, we strive to deliver value not only to our customers but also to the communities we serve. This award validates our efforts to make roads safer, and we remain steadfast in our mission to empower local stakeholders and educate the next generation.”
