One of the most exciting cars of 2022 comes fitted with one of AUTA’s favourite tyres
The new BMW 2 Series Coupe was recently launched in Singapore, and it’s a car we’re rather excited about. For the first time in ages we have a BMW crafted to that most traditional and beloved of recipes: take a smooth and powerful six-cylinder engine, stuff it into a compact body, and set it up for gratuitous oversteer.
But more than the prospect of being able to put this “drift machine” (BMW’s words, not ours) through its paces soon, what also pleased us was seeing the M240i xDrive fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres – complete with “star” mark on the sidewall to denote this tyre was specially developed to suit the specific characteristics of this two-door coupe.
The P Zeros performed extremely well at AUTA’s tyre test 2022, posting the best scores in wet grip, and ultimately coming in 2nd overall (click here to check out the full test results). Still, all our testers enjoyed the P Zero’s subjective feel from behind the wheel, which is why we gave it our Editor’s Choice Award.
Just one thing though: on the new M240i xDrive, we have a feeling they won’t last that long… The car might nominally be all-wheel drive, but it’s heavily rear-biased, and only sends power to the front wheels after traction is lost. Combine that with a limited-slip differential on the rear axle, and 374hp and 500Nm from the turbocharged 3.0-litre engine, and those P Zeros will no doubt get vapourised pretty quickly…
