SBTi Validates Pirelli Net-Zero-By-2040 Goal

Pirelli’s ambitious roadmap toward sustainability has just received a significant stamp of approval.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially validated both the near-term and long-term greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets Pirelli set earlier this year during their 2024-2025 Business Plan update.

What this means, is that SBTi has given the green light to Pirelli’s ‘long-term’ target of reaching Net Zero by 2040. For context, that’s the most challenging goal set by any tyre manufacturer, and it involves reducing absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by a whopping 90% compared to 2018 levels. This target aligns with the Paris Agreement’s aim to limit global warming to within 1.5°C.

The SBTi also validated Pirelli’s near-term goals. By 2030, the company aims to slash its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80%. Even more impressive, they’re tackling Scope 3 emissions too, which include the emissions from purchasing raw materials, services, and transport. Here, Pirelli plans to cut emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to their 2018 baseline.

Marco Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli Executive Vice Chairman, weighed in on the recognition: “The validation of our 2040 Net Zero targets by the Science Based Targets initiative makes us proud as it confirms the scientific soundness of the path we are committed to along the entire value chain. A pathway that is part of a complex global context and a transition process whose resilience must be supported by realistic and sustainable targets.”

It’s a tall order, but one that underscores Pirelli’s commitment to sustainability, not just in-house but across its entire value chain – from sourcing raw materials to the final stages of delivery.
